Blue Shield of California offers an expedited appeal process for members who have a serious health concern, which they define as imminent and serious threat to health of the member.  

What qualifies for an expedited appeal? Severe pain, Potential loss of life, Potential loss of limb, and Potential loss of major bodily function.  

You can request an expedited appeal by calling, faxing, or writing to Blue Shield.  

How to request an expedited appeal: 

  1. Call, fax, or write to Blue Shield of California 
  1. State that you want an expedited decision 
  1. Explain that waiting for a standard decision could seriously harm your health 

What happens after an expedited appeal request? 

  • Blue Shield will evaluate your request and medical condition  
  • If you qualify for an expedited decision, Blue Shield will respond within 72 hours  
  • If your health circumstances require it, Blue Shield will respond sooner
