PROTECT OUR BENEFITS IS AN ORGANIZATION WHOSE GOALS ARE TO ENHANCE THE DIGNITY AND QUALITY OF LIFE OF ALL SAN FRANCISCO CITY AND COUNTY RETIREES AND PRESERVE THEIR HEALTH AND RETIREMENT BENEFITS.

From the Executive Board of  Protect Our Benefits

SAN FRANCISCO   It looks like the City is in the slow process of reopening from the pandemic of COVID-19. It will take time and the main objective for everyone is their wellbeing and to wash hands frequently, practicing social distancing, a little fresh air and sunlight would not hurt either.

SAN FRANCISCO HEALTH SERVICE SYSTEM    SFHSS is Operating in a Virtual Environment and is Closed to the Public. SFHSS is committed to exploring a wide range of SDOH (Social Determines of Health) indicators that impact the whole person’s health and well-being of our membership. Also, SFHSS has considered for some time when it would be appropriate to issue a request for proposals to bid out our medical plans competitively. POB is a big proponent of more competition, the sooner the better. Medical expenses are getting out of hand especially early retirees (pre-Medicare). For more information, you can visit the HSS website, myhss.org

SAN FRANCISCO EMPLOYEE RETIREMENT SYSTEM (SFERS) What can be said about the stock market? It’s a roller coaster ride and hang on”. We have been extremely fortunate with SFERS, they had the foresight to plan for the long term. In May 2020, the SFERS portfolio posted a return of 0.56%.  The Fund has $25.7 billion and has a return of 1.5% so far for the fiscal year. Even with the flux market, their performance is still rather good.  The new Board President is Leona Bridges and Al Casciato is Vice-President. More information on SFERS visit the website sfgov.org/sfers

PROTECT OUR BENEFITS BOARD   Well if you have not heard or seen by now. POB has decided to suspend the efforts to place the Pre-1996 Restoration of Retiree Supplemental COLA (Cost of Living Adjustment) on the November 2020 San Francisco ballot. Blame COVI-19.  We were ready to proceed and basically the BOS went into shutdown and the City finances went to a tailspin. The Board (POB) was unable to gain the necessary required support from the Board of Supervisors, therefore our charter amendment could not move forward.  Do not think we have abandoned the retirees; WE ARE STILL HERE!  POB has good relations with SFERS, and we will continue to closely monitor the performance of the Fund. POB will continue to stress to HSS that we would like to have additional choices of healthcare providers offered in 2021. We would also like to have City Plan 1 restored. There will be other issues coming our way and we stand committed to advocating for positive outcomes.
